RSPB The RSPB is a charity to which I regularly donate. They do a great job of preserving habbit for birds (and indeed all wildlife); helping to push new laws on wildlife through bureaucracies; maintaining, and buying new land for nature reserves; rasing awareness; and countless other tasks. The RSPB is without a doubt my favourite charity, so I thought they deserved a link here (plus I won £3,500 in one of their raffles!).

Free software

Listed below are some links to free software that I use. Most of the are for Windows only (sorry Mac and Linux users!); but some are cross-platform, and are listed as such if known. Please also take a look at the SourceForge website, as there are thousands of free, open-source software applications listed there.

Application Description OS
avast! anti-virus Anti-virus software, with unlimited updates. Requires a free re-registration once a year (or thereabouts). Microsoft Windows; Linux; plus others.
Exact Audio Copy Software which rips your CDs to MP3 (or similar) format. This software does a very good job, as it also includes music in the lead-in/out parts of songs: especially useful if you have CDs which have tracks that segue into one another. Microsoft Windows.
Mozilla Firefox A free alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer, which is generally more secure and nicer to use. Microsoft Windows; Linux; Apple Mac; plus others.
Quintessential Player Audio player. Microsoft Windows.
SmartFTP FTP client (allows you to upload files to your website). Microsoft Windows.
Spybot — Search & Destroy Checks your computer for spyware (software which slows your PC down) and removes anything harmful. Microsoft Windows.
ZoneAlarm A firewall, which stops people maliciously connecting to your computer, and stops spybots maliciously sending data from your computer. Microsoft Windows.

Books

I'm not a big fan of books, but there are a few that I like, which are listed below (linked to their entries on Amazon):

The Five People You Meet in Heaven

Eddie's life comes to an abrupt end when he saves the life of a small girl at the fairground which he works. Eddie is sent on to the afterlife, where he meets five people who had a significate impact on Eddie's life (or vice versa). Each person elucidates Eddie of each event's impact on his life, ultimately culminating in the reason for his life on Earth.

Not being a person who particularly believes in the afterlife or anything religious, I still enjoyed this book, and thought it was a nice idea of how an afterlife might be. If there is an afterlife and it's like this, I'll be quite happy to kick the bucket!

The Meq

The Meq tells a story based around a boy named Zianno — or ‘Z’ for short — who is of the species Meq: a group of people who appear the same as human beings, but do not physically progress past the age of 12 (until they decided to procreate, at which point they become the same as the ‘Giza’, or human beings).

Z's adventure takes him all across the globe when a dear Giza friend of his, loses her child to one of the few ‘abhorrent’ Meq.

The Meq is actually the first in a triology of books by the author, Steve Cash; one of the original members of the 1970's group, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

Milligan's War

This book contains a condensed version of Spike Milligan's entire war memoirs. I found reading about a big period of his life quite enjoyable. It takes you through his (reluctant) conscription to the army; to his posting, and subsequent ‘adventures’, in Africa. He recollects his first true love in Italy; and his painful experience of mental illness. Finally it concludes with his leaving of the army, and his life during ‘peace time’. I found myself sympathising, laughing and feeling inspired throughout this biography; a full gamut of emotions to be had!

Personally, I recommend that you get them all seperately as I did — Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall; Rommel? Gunner Who?; Monty: His Part in My Victory; Mussolini: His Part in My Downfall; Where Have All the Bullets Gone?; Goodbye Soldier; Peace Work; — but if you'd just like the condensed version, or can't afford them all seperately, then this book highlights the best parts from the complete series.

The Last Day

The IDF have been secretly breeding human embryos with microchips embedded in their brains. These microchips allow the recipients to have vast amounts of data transfered into their brains in an extremely short period of time.

On the dawn of Christmas day a meteor strikes the IDF's research centre, freeing one of the fully formed humans. This human, named Jeza, appears to be some sort of Messiah, possibly the Second Coming. Her preachings have a huge impact on the world; most notably the corruptions and misguided paths of organized religions all over the world.

Unfortunately, this gripping book seems to have been deleted from the Amazon database, but if you can find a copy somewhere I recommend you give it a try.
